An eco-guard was killed during the night from Saturday to Sunday during the attack on a patrol station of the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature (ICCN) in Bukima in the heart of Virunga National Park. M23 combatants are suspected, according to initial information reported by Olivier Mushiete who “strongly denounces these attacks against protected areas”.
“The conservation of nature is paid for in human lives while its fundamental objective is to save humanity! We will redouble our efforts to definitively neutralize the negative forces and restore peace and security in all our protected areas ”, Olivier Mushiete added.
An official statement is expected during the day and will return to the circumstances and possibly the identity of the attackers, told ACTUALITE.CD, the park’s communication service.
At least 22 eco-guards have been killed since 2020. More than 2,000 militiamen are active in the Virunga National Park which does not control at least 12% of its area illegally occupied for illicit activities.
