This is the second World Cup in a row that the Ivorians are missing, after three consecutive participations (2006, 2010 and 2014).
“A draw was enough to go to the play-offs and give yourself the chance to qualify for the World Cup,” laments Patrick Anderson Aboa, a student. “Unfortunately, the Elephants got stuck. It’s a real shattered dream for all these young players,” he continued.
Same story on the side of the former Ivorian glories, like the former international goalkeeper Alain Gouaméné.
“I am very disappointed to see my country absent for the second time in a row at a World Cup. I cry for these young players who play in big clubs in Europe and who will watch Qatar-2022 on TV,” he regrets.
“It’s a huge disappointment for Ivorian football. There is a real mess in this football, which could not promote qualification,” plague for his part the former PSG midfielder Bonaventure Kalou, calling for the soon to be elected a president to the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF), a position for which Didier Drogba is a candidate.
The FIF was put under supervision in December 2020 by Fifa, which set up a “Normalization Committee” to try to resolve a crisis concerning its presidency.
Winner Tuesday evening, Cameroon is qualified for the play-offs which will allow five African teams to qualify for the World Cup.
