A spectacular fire destroyed in the night of Tuesday to Wednesday in the center of Bukavu, capital of South Kivu in the east of the DRC, a large building which housed in particular the regional station of the Congolese official television, noted an AFP correspondent.
There is no victim, but “the damage is enormous”, said Jérémie Basimane, spokesperson for the provincial government.
The building, “the Hôtel de Poste “, built before independence, once housed the postal services but had transformed over the years into a large multi-service public and private center, poorly maintained by the general opinion of the inhabitants.
In addition to the premises of the Congolese National Radio-Television (RTNC), several other private media, law firms, churches and various offices, administrative services such as the biometric passport capture center for the east of the DRC, were there.
They went up in smoke, as did vehicles that were parked within the building, said Mr. Basimane.
A fire had already broken out in the building ten years ago. The origin of this new incident is not yet known.
