CAS reduces suspension of Siasia, ex-Nigeria coach ~ #AFP:

The court considered “disproportionate” the life suspension imposed in April 2019 by Fifa on the 53-year-old technician, accused of having agreed in 2010 to join an attempt to manipulate matches.

While it is important “that the penalties be high enough to eradicate corruption” in football, this case is “a first offense”, which “did not” bring any benefit to Mr. Siasia “and” did not have negative or immediate effect “on other people, notes the CAS in its press release.

The arbitration panel also annulled the fine of 50,000 Swiss francs pronounced by Fifa, deeming the former international sufficiently sanctioned financially by his ban from football.

His suspension “from all football-related activities, nationally or internationally” remains pronounced as of August 16, 2019 and will therefore end in 2024.

Champion of France with Nantes in 1995, then ephemeral coach of Nigeria between 2010 and 2011, the former striker had played in the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

An investigation against him was opened in February 2019, following the broader investigations carried out around the manipulation of matches orchestrated by Wilson Raj Perumal, in connection with sports betting, according to Fifa.

Perumal, originally from Singapore, was arrested and then jailed in 2011 in Finland for numerous match-fixing related to sports betting. He then collaborated with investigators.
