Jacob Mafume, a lawyer and influential member of the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), is accused of fraudulently allocating residential property, including to his sister, when he was a city councilor in 2010.

His party had claimed at the time of his arrest in late November that it was a “poor political affair”, denouncing a maneuver to intimidate the government. “His real offense was winning the town hall” in September, the MDC tweeted.

“The mayor has obtained his bail,” Tonderai Bhatasara told AFP, believing that he should be released in the evening. “He is relieved. He has to see his doctor because he was imprisoned in a crowded cell,” he added, adding that his client had been complaining of symptoms similar to those of Covid-19 for more than a year. week.

“I am delighted that we were able to persuade the court that the judge who refused bail had lost his way,” he added.

When his health problems became known, the MDC and human rights activists campaigned for his release. The prison had refused him a visit from his private doctor.

Last week, two MDC officials and a well-known whistleblower journalist were arrested for publishing and / or disseminating “false information”.

Lawyer Job Sikhala and journalist Hopewell Chin’ono were refused bail. While lawyer and MDC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere awaits her hearing on Monday to be determined on her fate.
