Malagasy Ahmad Ahmad candidate for a second term at the head of CAF ~ #AFP:

“The @caf_online_FR has changed a lot over the past 4 years. I am proud of the work accomplished by my team. Thank you, as well as the support of #football in #Africa and beyond. After reflection and consultation, I have decided to represent me, ”he announced on Twitter.

CAF must hold its elective General Assembly on March 12, 2021 in charge of appointing a president.

This announcement comes in a context of mistrust between CAF and FIFA boss Gianni Infantino whose supervision was rejected by Mr. Ahmad in February.

In the summer of 2019, President Ahmad asked for FIFA’s help to supervise his organization, weakened by several controversies and governance problems.

Fifa N.2 Fatma Samoura had notably carried out a six-month mandate. But this one, which aimed to accelerate the reform process within the body, had not been renewed in early February 2020.

In addition to governance issues, Mr. Ahmad has faced corruption charges.

In June 2019 in Paris, the president of CAF was arrested and placed in police custody on suspicion of corruption by the Anti-Corruption Office of the Judicial Police (Oclciff). He came out free and without prosecution from his custody a few hours after his arrest.

This episode further damaged the image of the institution and its already controversial president.

In April 2019, the secretary general of the instance Amr Fahmy was dismissed. The latter had sent a letter to Fifa in which he accused Mr. Ahmad of corruption – payment of bribes to several leaders, personal use of CAF funds – and sexual harassment against several employees of the Confederation.

Mr. Fahmy had filed a complaint with the internal justice of Fifa against CAF which resulted in the opening of an investigation for “mismanagement”.
