The trial of former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and 27 others accused of taking power in a coup in 1989 has been postponed once again to September 15, the president of the tribunal announced on Tuesday. .

“The hearing is adjourned (…) to September 15 to put in place the” health measures against the new coronavirus, “said the judge about 45 minutes after the start of the hearing.

In a crowded room where a few rare people wore masks, several lawyers immediately expressed concern about the lack of physical distancing, requesting transfer to a larger room.

The start of the trial has been delayed several times since the end of July.

This trial is unprecedented in the Arab world, where the author of a successful coup had never been tried in recent history.

Aged 76, Omar al-Bashir was dismissed by the army in April 2019 after months of popular revolt.

He appeared along with the other defendants, including his former vice-presidents Ali Osman Taha and General Bakri Hassan Saleh, in a box.

The ousted president and several of the defendants face the death penalty for toppling the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Sadek al-Mahdi 31 years ago, in the third coup since Sudan’s independence in 1956.
