WTO fails to appoint interim Director General ~ #REUTERS:

Members of the World Trade Organization (WTO), an institution in crisis, have failed to agree to appoint an interim director general, the WTO announced on Friday.

The current managing director, the Brazilian Roberto Azevedo, will step down in a month, on August 31.

“There was no consensus”WTO spokesman Keith Rockwell said as members of the organization were asked to nominate one of the four deputy directors of the WTO.

According to Bloomberg, the United States has demanded that an American, Alan Wolff, become interim managing director, while the European bloc is proposing a German, Karl Brauner.

If the stalemate continues into September, the same source notes, the international trade rules arbiter will remain without a leader until WTO members choose a new director general for a four-year term.

Two African women applied for the post of general manager. They are Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala from Nigeria, former finance minister and former World Bank number 2. Kenya then nominated Amina Mohamed, a minister who was formerly Kenya’s ambassador to the WTO.
